Searching Videos for Business and General Interest

If you are interested in reviewing videos from news sources, companies or the public http://www.blinkx.com/home is a site that is worth your time. Blinkx.com is different than some other video search engines because in addition to searching the text and metadata associated with a video it transcribes the words you hear in the videos or as blinkx states they use “visual analysis and speech recognition to better understand rich media content.” This allows you to retrieve videos you might not otherwise be able to see and hear as metadata tags and text might not always be associated with videos for a search engine to index.

Business Use Example
Here is an example of a business use. When I first pull up Blinkx.com I see a wall of 25 videos that gives me a visual glance of what is online now and indexed within the last hour or so. This is helpful if I am looking for what is happening now in the news or what people find interesting.   For my business purpose, Starbucks has opened in China recently and I wanted to hear more of what is being said about their acceptance in China, so I typed in “Starbucks China”.  As of this writing 19 sources came up, some from the Wall Street Journal, Reuters, Fox News, and Bloomberg with titles such as “Lattes in the Forbidden City”, “Starbucks in a Culture Row” and “Schultz Says Starbucks to Expand Into China, India and Russia.” I received a very quick overview of what is being reported about Starbucks latest expansion. So try your business use and see what comes up.

General Interest Example
Since I cycle a lot I knew that Phil Liggett, who is the voice of the Tour de France, was visiting the opening of a large independent bike store (Wheat Ridge Cyclery) in the Denver Metro Area. I was not able to attend and so I typed in “Cycling Phil Liggett” and found a Channel 4 news video that interviewed him. So try out your general interest topic and enjoy.

I hope your year is progressing nicely and if I can help you with any research please call.
